In the heart of Kent, but a world away

More than somewhere to stop for the night

The Plough is a Grade II listed medieval Wealden hall house, run by chef-patron Richard and hotelier Marianne, tucked into a village in the Kent Downs. Come for a peaceful night between journeys, or stay longer and discover castles, vineyards, historic towns, coast and countryside.

Why the Plough

A memorable taste of Kent

Everything you need for a comfortable stop, and rather more reasons than you expected to stay a second night.

01

Two AA Rosettes

Two AA Rosettes held for eight years, everything made from scratch, from the brioche to the bangers.

02

Six countryside suites

Six suites in a separate barn, each named after a local woodland. On a clear day you can see as far as Whitstable.

03

A proper historic inn

A Grade II listed medieval hall house with dragon tie beams, log fires and a smuggling past. You may recognise it from The Darling Buds of May.

04

Made for exploring

Leeds Castle in 18 minutes, Faversham in 20, Canterbury in 33. Easy access from the M2 and M20.

05

Everyone is welcome

Every suite has a sofa bed, three are dog friendly, and there are two EV charging points in the car park.

06

Loved by our guests

Shortlisted for Muddy Stilettos Destination Pub for Kent in 2022 and 2023.

An easy addition to your journey

Leave the motorway behind

The Plough sits in a village between Charing and Faversham, a short hop from both the M2 and the M20. In the middle of nowhere and the middle of everywhere, as Richard and Marianne put it.

Make Kent part of the trip

One night, or a little longer?

However long you have, here is how other guests tend to shape a stay with us.

One night

Arrive, settle into your suite and eat well in the bar. Order breakfast the night before and we bring it to your room in the morning.

Two nights

Add a day at Leeds Castle, 18 minutes away, or the creek and independent shops at Faversham, then return for a Kentish ale and a seasonal supper.

Three nights

Slow the pace with one of three circular walks that start at the pub, a day in Canterbury, or oysters at Whitstable. We keep maps and wellies by the door.

Eat well

Taste Kentish produce at its finest

Richard is a classically trained chef-patron and everything is made on site, from the baguettes and brioche to the burgers and bangers. The menu moves with the seasons because the ingredients do.

  • Two AA Rosettes, held for eight years
  • Everything made on site, from scratch
  • Kentish ales and ciders, 30 gins, 12 rums
  • Please book — we are busy at the best of times

“The pub is in the village so a great setting, the staff are friendly and for a pub restaurant the food is exceptional. This isn’t a normal pub meal.”

Plan a relaxed arrival

Practical answers matter most to guests arriving at the end of a long journey. These are the questions we are asked before almost every European booking.

When can we check in?

Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is 11am. If you are crossing from the Continent and expect to arrive late, tell us when you book and we will have everything ready for you.

Is there free parking and EV charging?

Yes. Parking is free and unrestricted, right outside, and we have EV charging on site.

Can children and dogs stay?

Both are very welcome. We have family suites with sofa beds, three dog-friendly suites, and gardens for everyone to enjoy.

Do we need to reserve dinner?

We recommend it, particularly at weekends. Mention it when you book your room and we will hold a table for you.

Can you help us plan the drive?

Yes. Email us your crossing and we will send directions, a realistic drive time and a few things worth stopping for on the way.
